What we hope to achieve through this blog is to raise awareness for recycling in the developing world in Morocco. But first of all, I will provide all of you with some context. Over the years, with increased pressure from western countries, Morocco has shifted its priorities to alleviating poverty. It is now the number one priority and as a consequence, the topic of recycling sounds ridiculous to the people. Several organizations have attempted to educate the people on the dangers of pollution, however they all failed. This is why I decided to undertake a different approach, a more hands-on approach. Trash on the ground is prevalent in Morocco, in both wealthy and poor neighborhoods. As a result, homeless people have resorted to collecting this trash and giving it to recycling companies in exchange for money. However, we are aware that this task is exhaustive so what we hope to achieve is to relieve them from some of the hard work. We will collect trash ourselves and hand it to these people. By doing this we are able to “killing three birds with one stone”. Not only are we taking care the environment, we are also helping these individuals financially. We will be taking trash from people’s houses, and so this will raise awareness. By seeing young kids taking this initiative, the homeowners might be moved and therefore, engage themselves into the recycling cause.
